I used to play merge dragons with lucky patcher but my game backup had issues and I lost my progress. 

Someone recommended Dragons & Elfs which appears to be a *very* similar game with modified graphics but the same principles and game play as MD. 

There is a version online with a modified APK which is meant to allow unlimited gems and purchases but get an error stating its not compatible with the latest Android version which I have.

I have tried to patch this modified version of the game and also the original game from the Google play store and neither works. 

The modified version opens and plays but doesn't still bypass the play store for purchases. 

The official game download won't open once patched in lucky patcher at all. It just closes. I don't get an error message. 

I have tried 2 options from "menu of patches" "APK rebuilt for InApp and LVL emulation" which always worked for MD, and "APK with multi patch" / "Support patch for in-app and LVL emulation".
